Nir currently holds faculty positions as the Director of the Institute for Aging Research and the Professor in the Department of Medicine and Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is the Principal Investigator at the Nathan Shock and Glenn centers, and is presently leading EXCEL Study (Exceptional Longevity) to recruit 10,000 centenarians and their families for validation and discovery of new longevity genes. Dr Barzilai is also conducting TAME (Targeting/ Taming Aging with Metformin) – a multi-center study the goal of which is to prove that multi-morbidities of aging can be delayed in humans and to subsequently change the FDA indications to allow for next-generation interventions.
Dr Barzilai’s studies on families of centenarians have supported genetic/biological insights on protection against aging. Also, several drugs are developed based, in part, on these paradigm-changing studies.
Nir was the recipient of the NIH Merit Award aiming to extend the healthy lifespan in rodents through biological interventions. He is the author of over 290 peer- reviewed papers and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Irving S. Wright Award for Distinction in Aging Research in 2010, and the IPSEN Longevity award in 2018. Dr Barzilai has also been featured in prominent papers, podcasts, TV programs, and documentaries, such as 3 TEDx and TEDMED. His book “Age Later” was published in June 2020.
